Painting the Kitchen Cabinets

I am continuing my therapy by sharing the rest of our power paint party.  Don’t be fooled by the party part, no one was enjoying themselves!

You can see the kitchen transformation here.

When we remodeled the kitchen a few years ago, we added an island.

Unfortunately, it was attacked by mold, so I needed to paint this and thought it would look good in a different color.  The cabinets, appliances and backsplash are all white.  I used my homemade gray chalk paint.

What is worse than painting cabinets?  Painting them twice!

Before I arrived at the homemade chalk paint, I primed the doors and drawers.  One coat of paint on the drawers and I got smart…chalk paint to the rescue.

Could we fit more crap on the island?  Please excuse the mess.

The kitchen cabinets are white on the outside and matching chalk paint gray on the inside.

What have I learned?

  • When painting kitchen cabinets – remove the cabinet doors and all hardware (hinges too).
  • Number each cabinet.
  • When using latex paint plan to sand/prime/sand/paint 2 coats.
  • I would absolutely use a sprayer on the doors!  We used a brush and a roller and could not get in all the grooves.  The brush left marks.
  • There is a MOLD treatment that is designed to be mixed into a gallon of paint.  It prevents mold and mildew and is available at the home improvement stores in the paint dept.
  • Depending on the size of your kitchen, plan for at least 1 week to paint.  Probably 2 weeks from start to finish.
  • Having the right tools makes all the difference!  Invest in the proper equipment.
  • I also learned that we are all capable of making a bad situation better.
  • I am really pleased with the kitchen!  I may not have tackled it otherwise.

Homemade Chalk Paint:

  • Sample pot of paint
  • 2 Tbsp. Non-Sanded Grout
  • Stir and add water as needed.

For this project I used:

  • 1 Quart FLAT paint
  • 18 Tbsp. Non-Sanded Grout
  • Water as needed.

I look forward to getting up there for a little R&R!

PS- Thanks for the messages!  I hope when we sell this place the new owners realize that everything has been fixed, resolved and is new.

XO-

Really nice transformation. The kitchen looks much airier now! I too like the beadboard around the island. I also just saw a beadboard backsplash on another site that looked pretty nice too.

Love the new color! Could I ask what kind and color of paint you used...its a great color!

Also, you mentioned to spray the doors, but then you used chalk paint. Since you can't spray chalk paint...what did u do? Linda

Looking for a contractor should not be a painful experience but if you aren't careful and selective it can quickly become an expensive learning experience. Contractors are professional businessmen and as such they are regulated by the state to protect themselves and their clients if a dispute should arise. Before you hire any contractor take some simple precautionary steps to make sure the contractor you are prepared to hire has no complaints against the company.
